XVJ 149T - 1979 Cavalier Mk1 4 Door Saloon

More club cars?

Owner: Chris Thomas

My Cavalier started life as a 2000 GL auto in Ember red with grey velour interior. I found it in a scrap yard in 2005 where it had lain for 2 years after being part exchanged by its original owner - an old lady from Monmouth.

I took it home and put it pretty much straight through an MOT. A month later it did a 1000 mile trip around Ireland with no problems. Then in September, after a car show where it had boiled over, the engine finally dumped all its oil and water; so my daily driver became my main project.

I'd just finished University so, with all that time on my hands, got stuck in and got it restored in 4 months.

Since February 2004 the Cavalier has been put on the back burner but it's just a bottom end rebuild away from getting an MOT. I did all of the work bar the engine rebuild.

Here's the spec:

Shell restored with minor welding to sills, inner arches and one rear wheel arch.
Rubbing strips removed and chin spoiler fitted.
Re-sprayed in Porsche Guards Red and fitted with a black vinyl roof and red pop up sunroof.

Spax adjustable shocks and 1800 Manta -40mm springs (around 60mm lower than the Cavs springs), original suspension bushes, GT/E front roll bar, standard rear roll bar. BBS 15" alloys with 205/55 Avon ZV1s

Rear axle is a 3.67:1 ratio with rebuilt manual adjustable standard drums.

Fronts brakes are 2.2 Carlton vented discs, Alfa Romeo 75 Brembo alloy 2 pots which fitted with minor mods to the hubs. Copper lines and Goodridge hoses

Engine is a pre-cat 20XE fully rebuilt with ARP bolts, unknown fast road cams, Powercap and RamAir filter.

3 core rad with Astra GTE fan.

Custom made alloy heater box, Custom Solutions bling!

Interior is from a GT/E hatch with the rear seats modded to take headrests.
4x electric windows, central locking, Astrali leather steering wheel.

Future plans are to get the windows smoke tinted and to have the interior re-trimmed in red/black/grey Alcantara and leather, hopefully by Billing 2007!
