Gas Tanks by William R Blankley

All gas tanks ought to
come with a small "Rot In Peace" sticker as an
epitaph. I was coming to the joys of such things when it
came to me that there are none. One is well advised to
wear a very good pair of goggles at removal time. It is
best to remove it, take off the mud and then you will
find out a few things.
The large hoseclips on
the filler hose have usually rotted away for a start so
all that money you put into the tank is thrown out on
left-handers or drips onto your feet at fill up time. The
vent hoses have probably perished, so that's another
leakage point and so when those hoses are replaced a clip
on the tank vent join helps.
Bye the bye, an impact
driver is a great help when it comes to removing the
crosshead screws on the grounding strap and the filler
neck. Do not remove the tank gauge unit unless you have
to. Of the five bolts holding it one will most probably
shear before you realise that it is not coming undone.
Trouble! When I reassemble my tank gauge units I use a
little silicon sealer on the gasket and threads then
replace the bolts with stainless steel items in the hope
that if it has to be torn down again at some remote
future then at least the bolts will not have corroded.
