A211 GSA – Manta B Berlinetta

More club cars?

Owner: Gavin Neill

This was my second car from passing my driving test, it was a 1.8S Berlinetta Coupe which I picked up at the Inverness Car auctions. I went along to buy a 2.0S Sierra but the Manta was parked in front of it and I just fell in love with it straight away. I had a budget of £700 but the last bid came down to me at £800. With some sweet talking to my girlfriend at the time I managed to get enough to buy the car. At this stage I had just bought myself the Manta without even checking the Insurance costs. I was to find this was quiet steep for an 18 Year old student. My first years policy was £1200 and that was for Third Party Fire and Theft!!

When I bought the car I gave myself 12 Months before I thought I would have points on my driving licence but only managed 7 Days and was caught doing 90 in a 70 on the A9 and got the instant 3 points. This was fortunate as I had wound the car up to 110 just before getting to the speed trap.

I had the car for 3 Years and loved every day of it, but due to Student Life and housing costs it ending up going off the road due to mechanical problems.

The Car was totally original except for a Cherry Bomb Back Exhaust and the Extra Spot Lights on the front. It was a great car and always turned heads. It always amazed me that people who drove Ford Capris were classed as "sad gits" but the Manta had a completely different acceptable image all be it the same type of vehicle. The usual boy Racers at the time, in Inverness, were running XR2 and these were no match to the power of the Manta.

I have now got a family and a boring Family Car (Rover214Si) but still dream of getting a nice GTE Coupe to use and do up.

The thing that really makes me sad is that the initial Mechanical problems that the Manta died of was simply a Seized Front Brake Calliper. I have since learned more about cars and could have had the car back on the road the same day, with a drop of grease, instead it was left in the back garden and rotted away.

Please keep these great cars alive and I hope you have as much enjoyment from yours as I had from mine.
