Opel Manta A series TE2800 by Mark Kinnon

Overview

In 1971 Transeurop Engineering, a Belgian tuning shop, put an Opel 2.8 litre 6 cylinder engine complete with its bigger gearbox into an Opel Manta. It was entered in the 1971 Tour of Belgium, it won several stages and finished 7th after loosing two cylinders.

After testing it was agreed to let the Opel factory supply engine-less cars and 6 cylinder engines to Transeurop Engineering, who would produce vehicles on a small scale.

As the 6 cylinder engine is longer than the 4 cylinder version, it was necessary to remove the panel which supports the radiator and install a U-shaped tubular crossmember into the engine bay.
It was also necessary to hammer out a slight recess to the rear of the engine to allow room for the larger gearbox.

In order to maintain weight distribution with the heavier engine the following changes were made:

  • The bonnet was replaced with a lightweight fiberglass item.
  • A spoiler shaped front valence with built in bumper was installed.
  • The battery was relocated to the boot.

To cope with the extra power the following modifications were carried out:

  • The front springs were replaced with stiffer items.
  • Uprated shock absorbers were installed.
  • Ventillated front disk brakes were installed.
  • Wide alloy wheels and larger tyres were fitted, to cover these, flared wheel arch panels were installed.

A Nardi steering wheel and Recaro reclining seats replaced the usual items.

With 142bhp on tap, 0-60 mph took 7.6 seconds and 0-100 mph took 22.2 seconds the claimed top speed was 128.5 mph.

As Road & Track magazine reported in 1974:

"These are all very credible figures for a perfectly civilised, silent road car costing about half as much as a basic Porsche 911 of approximately equal perfomance....This is a car that can be driven in an extreemly polished style at any speed"

For those requiring even better performance; a rally version of the TE2800 was produced with stiffened supension, 8 inch wheel rims and an engine tuned to produce 230 bhp with three Weber carburettors.

Sadly the TE2800 was only available in left hand drive; no examples have ever been found in the UK.
