Opel
Manta B series (1981-88) 1.8S GTJ by
Paul Brennecker
Overview
The GTJ model was the first of the facelifted Mantas.
Opel broke new ground, offering this model with the
Family II Over head Camshaft engine. The engine was being
used in most Opel models from 1982, in various sizes. The
1.8S GTJ bore little resemblance to the earlier GTJ
model. This was the basic Manta Model, wheras the
previous GTJ was the top of the range, sporting edition.
With basic trim but the same mechanical components as
other models, it proved to be the perfect entry level
Manta.
The
GTJ stayed in production for 1year, being replaced by the
GT. The differences in trim levels seemed too small to
continue producing them - the model dissappeared making
it a rare example of relatively low volume production.
